If you play sports regularly then you know its not if you get hurt but when. Most injuries are the type you can play through or just sit out a few days and heal but what are the signs its a more significant injury?
It’s important to know that probably 75% or more of sports injuries do not require extra care but for the 25% that do the sooner you get treatment the better for healing.
The 3 tell tales signs I see the most often that an injury requires a more detailed evaluation and treatment are obvious and should be evaluated ASAP after they occur. They are
1) Injuries that caused altered consciousness. This can mean dizziness, weakness, temporary loss of consciousness, lightheadedness or confusion. These are signs of a concussion and need further evaluation.
2) Injures that cause a severe and noticeable alteration of the gait. This can mean you are walking with a limp, an arm or leg does not want to move correctly or something simply feels wrong.
3) Injuries that result in you not being able to put any weight on a leg or arm. These can be severe sprain/strain injuries or possible broken bones. These require further evaluation within 1-2 days if not sooner.
Any sports injury resulting in any of these 3 signs should be evaluated by chiropractor or other doctor as soon as possible after they occur. Your chiropractor is especially suited for #’s 2 and 3 because they are musculoskeletal injuries and can often be treated most effectively by your chiropractor.
Concussions should be evaluated by your MD if symptoms are severe.
Remember, the sooner you seek treatment for these types of injuries the better you heal.
