In the modern world its a fact that we are all exposed to numerous toxins day in and day out. They are in our air, water, food, medications and just about everywhere else too.

Fortunately the human body is a miracle worker with detoxifying itself and at least blunting the effects of environmental toxins. One of the biggest issues with toxicity though is that most toxins, including pesticides, herbicides and some metals is that they are fat soluble and thus reabsorbed into fat once in the body.

This simply means that during the normal course of excretion these substances are re-absorbed by the body. Not to fear though, these 5 foods help bind toxin in the intestines and help escort them out of the body. Even better news… you already probably eat them all, just not in big enough quantities.

1- Long Grain Brown Rice: the proteins found in the long grain brown rice effectively bind to numerous metabolites of pesticides and heavy metals as it works its way through your digestive tract. Eating a small portion of brown rice with each meal significantly increases the excretion of toxic substances.

2-Broccoli: this food is a superstar for removing toxins from the body. Broccoli contains numerous compounds that not only bind toxins but also increase the amounts of key nutrients in the blood which bind with them as well. As with the rice, eating a small portion of broccoli each meal ensures you are clearing as much toxicity as possible.

3- Green Tea: Green tea is so rich in anti-oxidants that is it has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in numerous studies. It also encourages fat burning, which releases stored toxic metabolites and also contains substances that bind to them and usher them out of the body. 2-3 cups a day is the perfect amount.

4- Black berries: black berries have one of the highest concentrations of phytonutrients of any berry (although all berries are great for reducing toxicity).  The dark pigment found in the berry is from these anti-oxidant rich compounds. 1/2 cup of black berries a day is a great addition to your diet to help detoxify the body.

5- Cayenne Pepper: this spicy pepper contains lots of capsaicin, which is the chemical that brings the heat! It is also a potent stimulus for fat burning which releases stored toxins to be released by the body.

Adding these 5 foods is a great start to increasing your natural detoxification processes. Don’t forget to pick up my free cook book which has plenty of healthy recipes that also aid in natural detoxing.  You can download it from the upper right portion of this page.

Chiropractic care is an important part of maintaining your overall health because it is critical to keep your physical body moving properly.  When we lose our normal motion all sorts of health problems develop including arthritis, chronic tight muscles and sciatica just to name a few of the most common ones.

Despite this many people still only seek chiropractic care when they are already in pain.  In reality chiropractic care is much better utilized as a regular form of therapy to keep pain away rather than for helping get rid of it once its already there.

Here are the top 3 reasons to see your chiropractor TODAY before you have pain, rather than when a problem has already progressed to the point you need treatment.

1- Chiropractic care allows for the normal motion of joints which slows down both degenerative disc disease and arthritis.

2- Reduced tension in muscle tissue leading to less soreness and lessening or resolution of chronic headaches.

3- Less interference of the nervous system allowing the body to regulate and self heal more effectively.

There you have it. The top 3 reasons to stop in and get adjusted today! The next time your thinking about putting off your chiropractic care remember the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pounds of cure.”

It’s a well documented fact that the majority of Americans do not get enough micronutrients from the foods they eat. Things like vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and other nutrients are not found in many of the typical foods we eat.

This causes a myriad of subtle health problems from easy bruising to trouble recovering from exercise.  And while its always a good idea to take a multivitamin obtaining important nutrients from food should also be a priority.

This smoothie recipe is my go to smoothie to make sure I get plenty of high quality nutrients from my food.  It’s easy to make and tastes great plus you get a good balance of healthy fats and carbohydrates.

Dr. Austin’s Micronutrient Smoothie

2 bananas

1/4 cup frozen cranberries

1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries

4 frozen strawberries

4-5 frozen dark cherries

1 avocado

1 tablespoon raw cocoa powder

Place all ingredients in a blender and add enough water to cover the ingredients.  Blend for 30 seconds or until smooth. Enjoy!

For additional smoothie recipes download my cookbook. It’s packed with healthy recipes and its free! Fill out the form in the top right hand corner and I’ll email it to you today.

Modern medicine is entering a HUGE transition.  Medical costs are out of control. Doctor’s are being arrested for large-scale medical fraud (see Dr. Farid Fata) and recently a strain of bacteria was found in an American hospital that is resistant to EVERY SINGLE antibiotic humans have.

In addition to these big changes on the surface of American healthcare there is a growing undercurrent of mistrust of Americans towards big medicine. Most people have either been charged an outrageous price for a drug to only to find out there was a much cheaper alternative or paid an enormous co-pay for a procedure that would up not being covered by their insurance.  Many more stories of shady practices, downright bad advice or other misdeeds are also common.

So what is the future of health care? Who should you trust with your health? Below are 3 undeniable reasons your chiropractor should be your primary health care provider as this sea-change in modern health care plays itself out.

1) Chiropractic focuses on fixing the problem, not covering it up.

A recent CDC report (https://www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2013/12_0316.htm) says that up to 75% of medical treatments are now aimed at treating diseases that are the direct result of lifestyle.  That means diet, exercise, sleep, anything we do on a daily basis.

Most medical doctors simply don’t know what to tell you if you ask about diet, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, etc… The reason? They never had any formal education about those topics and most never took the electives to learn about it.

A chiropractor has at bare minimum 1 full year of nutrition and many have gone on to do additional work in nutrition and they walk the walk. Many also have more practical knowledge on getting better sleep, how to exercise to lose weight and how to reduce stress. They won’t simply suggest a pill and show you the door. Your chiropractor will help root out the source of your health concern and help you eliminate it.

2) Chiropractic is extremely safe and effective for a variety of conditions

Chiropractic can be used for a variety of conditions. Some of the more well known are headaches, back pain, sciatica, numbness and tingling, treating herniated discs and tennis elbow. It can also be used effectively to treat colic in babies, digestive issues, sinus problems, and helps regulate the immune system and lower blood pressure.

With all the numerous benefits it makes sense to start with chiropractic before looking to drugs and surgery to fix a problem.  Consider this fact: a 2006 study (http://www.whale.to/a/null9.html) found that medical treatment caused 783,936 deaths per year.

The numbers are down right scary and a significant portion of those deaths are people who were taking the meds as prescribed.  I.E. following the instructions they were given. And yes, this includes seemingly innocent over the counter meds like Advil and Tylenol.

With chiropractic the worst side effect is some stiffness following treatment or the adjustment itself may be mildly painful if the condition is acute.

3) Chiropractic focuses on living a healthy lifestyle

With 75% of health problems stemming from lifestyle it only makes sense to seek advice from the most qualified and experienced voice you can find.  Often times the mainstream advice on wellness, nutrition, sleep, stress, etc… just simply isn’t very useful or accurate. Look no further than Americas ever rising levels of heart disease, cancer and myriad other diseases. What we are doing isn’t working so why keep doing it?

Doctors of chiropractic can help guide you in the right direction with nutrition, natural pain reduction, sleep and many other health care concerns.

I invite you to see for yourself what kind of information I can provide you. Download our free cookbook at the top of this page. There are also chapters on healthy living to get you started. I think you will like what you find.

I’m relatively new to the world of stuffed peppers but they have quickly become one of my favorite foods to make.

They are easy, quick and you can make lots of different variations. The one I’m going to share with you today is one of my early creations and I think you’ll really like it.  By the way if you want more healthy recipes you can get my free cook book by filling out your name and email above. I’ll have it to you in 5 minutes!

Rice and Turkey Stuffed Peppers

4 bell peppers, cored and rinsed out

1 cup long grain brown rice, cooked

1lb ground turkey

1/2 small onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 teaspoon salt

7-8 twists of ground black pepper

1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese

In a large pan add the oil and heat over medium heat. Add the turkey, onion, garlic and salt and pepper and cook until no pink remains in turkey, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, boil the peppers for 10 minutes. When done, remove from heat and set out on a baking dish.

When the turkey has no pink remaining add in the 1 cup of cooked rice and stir to mix. You may add an additional teaspoon of salt if so desired.

Spoon the turkey mixture into the peppers and sprinkle 1/4 cup of cheese on top of each pepper.

Bake the peppers for 35 minutes at 350 degrees in the oven. Remove and enjoy!

What we eat is the base building block of our overall health. It’s a simple fact that what we put in our bodies either supplies it with what it needs to be healthy and vibrant or it does not. It’s that simple.

Most people know they should eat better but don’t know where to start. Does this sound like you? Would  you like to do something about it? If you are reading this thinking to yourself “yes I would like a simple place to start to get some basics down” then you are in the right place.

I authored and published a healthy eating cookbook just for people like you!

I personally live this stuff. I make the recipes I put in the cook book and and follow the principles outlined in the first couple of chapters. I wrote this book to give people a starting point. Somewhere to begin to learn about healthy eating.

I’m giving this cook book away for free. You can download it from the box at the top of this page. It can be on your phone or computer in less than 5 minutes.

My personal favorite recipes from it are the almond chicken and heavy on the veggies meatloaf.  This stuff is real food. Not cardboard crap you wouldn’t ordinarily make. Good old fashioned food that tastes great and is great for you!

There are recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the great news is that once you get used to these recipes you can find more at our website and at my blog www.cookingchiropractorblog.com.  I want you to succeed on your path to better health and this book is a great place to start!

Sleep is a hot topic these days and for good reason. More people are reporting difficulty falling asleep, insomnia and disrupted sleep than ever before and the problem only continues to get worse.

Why is it so hard for most people to get good and adequate sleep?

For most people the problem is probably caffeine intake! I know, I know. You probably just read that and thought “yeah but everyone drinks caffeine.” But just hear me out. I think you’ll be surprised.

Caffeine found in coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks and certain medications can profoundly affect sleep quality and the ability to get to sleep.

The average American consumes 200mg of caffeine. Many consume far more.  Anything over 500mg can start to cause toxic side effects such as anxiety, nervousness or heart palpitations.

Another issue is that caffeine has a 6 hour half life in the human body. That means that if you drank 200mg of caffeine at noon there would still be 100mg in your blood at 6pm and 50mg at midnight. More than enough to disrupt sleep.

Caffeine is such a powerful stimulant that even a small amount can keep you up or prevent the deep regenerative sleep we all need.  So here are my suggestions.

  1. Consume all your caffeine before 9am.
  2. Keep it to under 100mg (1 small cup of coffee on average).
  3. Try to skip a few days during the week to prevent building up a tolerance.

Following these steps should help your body get rid of the excess caffeine before your trying to fall asleep. As an added bonus your stress levels should decrease as well because caffeine works by causing the adrenal glands to secrete stress hormones, which also stay in the blood longer the more there are of them.

If you are still having trouble sleeping after reducing caffeine call us at 715-246-7500 and schedule an appointment.  We can help further evaluate where you may be having problems.

If you play sports regularly then you know its not if you get hurt but when. Most injuries are the type you can play through or just sit out a few days and heal but what are the signs its a more significant injury?

It’s important to know that probably 75% or more of sports injuries do not require extra care but for the 25% that do the sooner you get treatment the better for healing.

The 3 tell tales signs I see the most often that an injury requires a more detailed evaluation and treatment are obvious and should be evaluated ASAP after they occur.  They are

1) Injuries that caused altered consciousness. This can mean dizziness, weakness, temporary loss of consciousness, lightheadedness or confusion. These are signs of a concussion and need further evaluation.

2) Injures that cause a severe and noticeable alteration of  the gait. This can mean you are walking with a limp, an arm or leg does not want to move correctly or something simply feels wrong.

3) Injuries that result in you not being able to put any weight on a leg or arm. These can be severe sprain/strain injuries or possible broken bones. These require further evaluation within 1-2 days if not sooner.

Any sports injury resulting in any of these 3 signs should be evaluated by chiropractor or other doctor as soon as possible after they occur.  Your chiropractor is especially suited for #’s 2 and 3 because they are musculoskeletal injuries and can often be treated most effectively by your chiropractor.

Concussions should be evaluated by your MD if symptoms are severe.

Remember, the sooner you seek treatment for these types of injuries the better you heal.

If you suffer a sports injury or have lasting effects from an old injury call our office. We can evaluate new injuries and treat them and address any effect old injuries are having on you now.

Our offices can be reached at 715-246-7500 (4 Corners) or 715-265-7500 (Glenwood City).  For more information join our Glenwood City/New Richmond area Sports Nutrition Page. The link can be found on the Arvold Chiropractic Facebook page or Facebook Message us.

If you have ever been diagnosed with bursitis you know all too well the pain, stiffness and frustration associated with it.  A bursa is a fluid filled sac or cavity in the body that is designed to reduce friction between bones. When this sac gets inflamed you are diagnosed with bursitis, which is just an inflamed bursa.

So how does a bursa become inflamed? Simple. Lack of normal motion of the bones causes a situation where the bursa in under more pressure than normal. Sound familiar? That’s because many problems with the spine that cause pain are from the same cause.

In fact, spinal misalignments are typically what cause bursitis to happen in the first place. An area of the spine does not move properly which causes compensation in the associated area. Lets say for example you have an inflamed shoulder bursa.  Lack of normal motion in the middle back causes you to compensate by using an altered range of motion in your arm. After several months of this the bursa has been under much more pressure than normal and inflammation results.

A bursitis is essentially on overuse injury. The key to healing it is to correct the motion problems in the spine, and extremity if any are present, and to allow the area enough time to rest and recover without overusing it. It is also helpful to ice the affected area while healing.
