Lets face it. Injuries are a part of life. And whether they occur at work, at play or another time they limit our enjoyment of life by causing pain, limited movement and reduced ability to get work done.
So how long should a sprain/strain type injury take to heal? Well, under normal circumstances it takes the ligaments, tendons and muscle tissues involved about 90 days to fully heal. This 90 day window is important because it is during this initial period that the most gains or losses can be made in healing.
As a chiropractor I treat sprain and strain injuries to the spine and extremities every day so I am very familiar with the time it takes to heal these injuries and what can cause the healing time to be longer or shorter. The most important thing is to being treatment as soon as possible even if its only icing the injured area and avoiding using it for several days.
You need to allow the body the time it needs to adequately heal the injured tissues without causing further injury by continuing to use the injured area. By far the most common mistake I see is people rushing the healing process and overusing the injured area before it has healed prolonging the healing time of the injury and in some cases causing further damage.
If you injure yourself take it seriously and make sure to allow your body time to heal and seek professional help if needed. If the injury is to the spine I recommend adding chiropractic adjusting into your treatment so that the areas affected heal properly and do not put pressure on the nerves in the spine.
